Beneath the surface

I think that the secret to being a great networker is the underlying belief that all people have a fascinating story lying just beneath the surface of everyday conversation. A story that is authentic, intimate and always, in some way or another, relatable.

In this context, a conversation becomes an adventure: where can we go? What risks can we take? What boundaries can be pushed? What discoveries can we make? What treasure can be found, if we look hard enough?

If we are forever on the precipice of meaningful insights and connection with the people around us, we might:

  • Ask questions that are a little more probing
  • Provide answers that are a little more revealing
  • Listen a little harder to the hints and clues that are scattered in every sentence

In doing so, we become explorers, travelling far and wide in search of small and beautiful insights: moments of vulnerability and honesty, that bring us just a little closer to the authentic person beneath the surface.
